Frigidaire serial number lookup: how old is the appliance?

The serial number is on a tag inside the appliance: on the upper wall of the fresh-food compartment of a refrigerator, or along the door opening of a washer, dryer or dishwasher. In a Frigidaire serial the third character is the last digit of the year and the two digits after it are the week.

Decode a Frigidaire serial number

Look for “Serial”, “Serial No.” or “S/N” on the rating plate. It is not the model number. What you type stays in your browser.

How to read a Frigidaire serial number

Built since 1986

Plant, product letter, year digit, then week

The third character is the last digit of the year. The two digits after it are the week. The first two characters are the plant and the product.

Shape: ten characters: a letter or digit, a letter, then eight digits.

VplantFproduct5year22week00000
Example: serial VF52200000 reads as week 22 of 2025 (around May). The same code also fits 2015, 2005 or 1995.

Only the last digit of the year is stored, so the code repeats every ten years. The second character is the product: A refrigerator, B freezer, C washer, D dryer, E laundry center, F range, H dishwasher, G or P microwave. Other letters exist.

Where to find the serial number

Most current Frigidaire tags also print the manufacture date next to the serial number. When it is there, read it directly.

RefrigeratorTop-freezer: upper left side wall of the fresh-food compartment. French-door and side-by-side: upper right side of the fresh-food compartment
FreezerUpright: along the interior side trim. Chest: on the left outside wall, above the access panel
WasherFront-load: along the trim of the door. Top-load: along the back of the tub opening, under the lid
DryerAlong the top of the door opening. Laundry centers: on a white sticker inside the dryer door
DishwasherOn the inner side of the door, or on the right side of the tub, visible with the door open

If the serial number does not decode

  • The decade is in neither the serial number nor the model number. The print date in the owner’s manual or on the installation sheet shows which decade a repeating code belongs to.
  • Gibson, Kelvinator, Tappan and White-Westinghouse appliances built by Electrolux use the same code.
  • The manufacturer can confirm the date from the serial: Frigidaire registration, warranty or serial lookup.

About Frigidaire

General Motors owned Frigidaire until 1979, when it passed to White Consolidated Industries. Electrolux bought that company in 1986 and still owns Frigidaire. Frigidaire heating and cooling equipment is a separate business, built by Nordyne under licence, with its own serial code.

Questions and answers

Which characters in a Frigidaire serial number show the date?

The third character is the last digit of the year. The two digits after it are the week. The first two characters are the plant and the product. This applies to units built since 1986.

The decoder shows more than one possible year. Which one is right?

Part of the Frigidaire date code repeats, so the serial alone fits more than one year. A manufacture date printed on the rating plate, the print date of the owner’s manual or the installation record settles it. For equipment that is still running, the more recent year is usually the right one.
