Goodman’s service bulletin lists the example serial as built on April 11, 2018. One widely copied chart calls the third and fourth digits the week. Goodman’s warranty documents and the serial ranges in recall notices show that they are the month.
Where to find the serial number
On an outdoor unit the nameplate is mounted upright on the panel next to or above the refrigerant line connections. The exact spot varies with the size of the unit.
On a furnace the nameplate is on a side panel behind the front panel. Take the front door off to see it.
If the serial number does not decode
- Amana heating and cooling equipment has been built by Goodman since 1997 and now belongs to Daikin. It is a separate business from Amana appliances, which belong to Whirlpool and use different serial formats.
- Amana serials from before about 2001, some printed with a dash after the first two digits, are not covered by the decoder.
- Gas furnaces from the 1980s and 1990s print the year of the safety standard they were certified to, for example “Z21.47” followed by a year. The furnace was built in that year or a few years after it.

Amana began in Amana, Iowa in 1934 and was owned by Raytheon from 1965. Goodman bought the company in 1997, kept the heating and cooling side and passed the appliance side to Maytag in 2001 and 2002. The appliances went to Whirlpool with Maytag in 2006. The two businesses use unrelated serial codes.
