Kenmore serial number lookup: how old is the appliance?
Kenmore appliances were built for Sears by other manufacturers, and the serial number follows the builder’s code. The first three digits of the model number show who the builder was. Choose them below, then type the serial.
Decode a Kenmore serial number
Who built your Kenmore appliance?
The first three digits of the model number, the part before the period, name the company that built the unit. The serial number then follows that company’s date code.
| Model number starts with | Built by | How the date is coded | How we know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 106, 110, 664, 665 | Whirlpool | The first letter is the plant. The second character is the year, as a letter or a digit. The two digits after it are the week. | Recall notices confirm 110 and 665. Parts references list 106 and 664. |
| 253, 417, 790, 791, 970 | Frigidaire | The third character is the last digit of the year. The two digits after it are the week. The first two characters are the plant and the product. | Sears PartsDirect and recall notices confirm 790. Parts references list the others. |
| 362, 363, 464 | GE | The first letter is the month and the second letter is the year. Both use the same twelve letters, and the year letters repeat every 12 years. | A recall notice confirms 363. Parts references list 362 and 464. |
| 795, 796 | LG | The serial starts with three digits. The first is the last digit of the year and the next two are the month. | Recall notices confirm both. Sears PartsDirect confirms 795. |
| 596 | Amana | Only the last two characters are letters. The first of them is the year and the second is the month. | A recall notice confirms 596 on refrigerators. |
The linked pages give the full code tables and worked examples for each builder.
Where to find the serial number
The tag carries the model number and the serial number. The model number looks like 110.12345678: the three digits before the period name the builder.
| Appliance | Where the serial tag is |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | Inside the fresh-food compartment on a side wall or the ceiling, behind the crisper, or behind the kick plate |
| Washer | Under the lid, around the door frame, or on the rear panel |
| Dryer | At the door opening, or on the rear panel |
| Dishwasher | On the rim of the tub or the inside edge of the door |
| Range | Around the oven door frame, or inside the drawer compartment |
| Microwave | Inside the cavity near the door frame. Over-the-range models: behind the vent grille |
If the serial number does not decode
- A model number starting 630 is a dishwasher built by Bosch. Look for a separate FD number on the tag and use the Bosch decoder.
- Kenmore microwaves, and Kenmore appliances from builders not listed here, are not covered.
- Use the printed manufacture date when the tag has one. Frigidaire-built Kenmore tags often do.
What the age tells you
| Equipment | Typical service life |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 12 to 14 years |
| Clothes washer | 10 to 13 years |
| Clothes dryer | 13 to 14 years |
| Dishwasher | 9 to 15 years |
| Range or oven | 13 to 17 years |
About Kenmore
Kenmore is a store brand created by Sears and owned by Transformco since 2019. Sears never built the products itself. Each Kenmore product was made by another manufacturer, and the serial number follows that manufacturer’s format.
Brands that share this serial system: Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, LG.
